The best in her collection
In my humble opinion this blows the Gruffalo out of the water, it is my absolute favourite and my daughter who is only 5 month will stay awake until the end of the book and pass out, she smiles at this book more than any others.

The witch had a cat, and a very tall hat...
As an Early Years teacher Julia Donaldson’s childrens’ books are typically a joy. There’s a bit of variety in age/stage targeting, but regular themes include sharing; working together; tricksiness, where an often smaller underdog/s succeed in duping larger, ill-intentioned foes; determination; and the avoidance of stereotypes. I love many, and how well kids (both friends/family, and pupils) respond to them. Books that draw kids in are always a good thing. But ‘Room On the Broom’ remains my personal favourite. If for nothing more than the audacious similarity substitution of ‘witch’ for ‘fish (in ‘fish and chips’)!This book is a bit more complicated in structure than ‘The Gruffalo’, but although meetings are largely between friendly, collaborative entities (until a dragon is encountered) the story has some similar themes: a progressive journey; encounters with different creatures; and a life-threatening encounter with a mythical beast – in this case resolved by creative collaboration between friends rather than individual rapid-thinking against a series of potential adversaries. This is a lovely book to read aloud (I’ve always given the dragon the Welsh valleys accent of my late grandparents – the dragon is red, like the one on the Welsh flag) and has beautiful illustrations that stand up well to being shown to a group when reading. Perfect for preschool through to early primary.

Really good for tots
This book was brilliant. We have the hardback copy of the book but bought this for my baby grandson. It is really brilliant and younger children love the interactions with each page. Highly recommended.
