Unbelievable 3GHz VNA with 4" Screen and CAL Hardware

Just arrived today and I am totally blown away by this little compact 3GHz capable VNA for $130 bucks. I am nearly giddy with amazement, because not only is the construction of the product (full metal case) solid built, but hardware is really quite capable. As anyone who has previously purchased the NanoVNA series knows, its very functional for hobby and minor field work. This unit, the SAA-2N V2.2 is the latest in the NanoVNA series which now includes 'N' type RF connections instead of SMA. Most engineers and HAM enthusiasts will appreciate that when you need to connect to antennas outside, or test receiver LNA's and downstream equipment, you likely need to use N-type connections. Noting that it is totally possible to use N-to-SMA adapters for the earlier models, the problem lies in the fact that when you attach a heavy N-type cable to a same fragile SMA adapter, you run the risk of snapping it in two, but not so with this unit. The SAA-2N V2.2 has the same good RF performance for S-parameter measurements as previous models, so I won't cover that in this review. Having the screen now at a pleasant 4 inches is very helpful compared to the earlier 2.7", and 3.2" versions. The specs have conflict when it comes to battery capacity, in the graphic images is a comparison that says it has 3000mA/Hr but down in the text area of the spec it states 1950mA. I will have to report back to really see which is correct. I own a very nice HP8753C vector network analyzer along with several calibration kits. I ran some tests using the HP85032B cal kit on my VNA and then testing each of the three hardware cal adapters that came with the SAA-2N V2.2 . The Short and Open have virtually no difference and the RF 50ohm Load held better than -30dB return loss at 3GHz, which is really not bad. That is a VSWR: of 1.065. Using a 10dB attenuator on S11 port, yielded a near perfect -19.96dB return loss. The two N-Type to N-Type 20.5" long cables are pretty good, and able to maintain a -23dB return loss out to 3GHz, which is better than Port 2 can perform at (-13dB RL).I really am impressed at what it can do and all that is included for the price. I now can have a portable VNA virtually anywhere I go. And if you need a hardcopy of your measurements, you can download the free PC software from GITHUB which will allow the VNA to output data via the USB port to the computer and then you can save it in S2P or CSV for later. (You have to make the measurement while using the software, and you can't save it on the instrument and then later print it via the PC.)Fantastic piece of gear for the money!

NanoVNA with N connectors

I ordered the one with type N connectors since the SMA are small for my arthritic hands. This made the unit bigger and this unit has a strong metal case. It has capabilities far beyond my abilities. I have tuned some duplexers and done antenna tests and have to re-view some YouTube videos each time I use it.I find it to be an excellent and reasonably priced VNA.

Great tool for the ham shack

Great piece of kit. Very useful.

Useful Piece of Equipment!

I bought this to use matching antennas for ham radio but it has a whole bunch of other useful features as well, including measuring coax, resonance measurements and a few other measurements I don't know how to use yet. Definitely worth the money I payed because the VNA is smarter than me! :)

How did I live without this for so long!

I'm not sure how I functioned before I bought this NanoVNA! I was slightly skeptical how well it would work since there are a lot of "clone" version of this device, but I was pleasantly surprised that it did everything I expected of it and then more. It seems solidly built and is reassuringly heavy. The supplied cables and test components are high quality. This is a fairly complex device and the included "instructions" are minimal. Basically just a list of the menu settings. However there are lots of YouTube videos and web pages which cover the operation of this and similar small VNAs.It can easily measure cable losses, antenna matching and lots of other parameters of RF networks. I've found it surprisingly accurate when measuring loss, return loss, SWR etc and it's invaluable for things like tuning RF filters and matching antennas. It's really a remarkable device

UPDATED: I Like it but.....

I wanted the SAA-2 V2, and I thought I did my research, but after receiving the unit and working with it, I learned that this is most-likely a clone. You cannot update/upgrade the software yourself. The Amazon page tells you to go to the github page where you can update the software, and that is where you learn that this device is not supported and was discontinued in 2020.The VNA-QT software does not work with this device on Windows 10, at least I've tried and no joy. VNA Saver works fine. As for the device itself, it seems solid, and appears to work well. I really like it, but I don't like that I cannot update the software. The silkscreen is very faint as well (as stated in the print on Amazon), which seems strange to me, but that is not an issue for me other than it could be an indication of a knock off. The cables are great and everything else is as advertised. I have not decided if I'm going to keep it though. Not being able to upgrade the software is huge to me and it is not supported by the community that I can find.I had a NanoVNA H that I upgraded to the latest software but it was the smaller display, so I wanted something bigger. This one definitely is bigger and heavier. It has the metal case and feels good in the hands. The larger battery capacity is great too. Was working on my antenna outside for well over an hour with no problem where my NanoVNA H failed. When you go to the Version number, there is none, another indication of a possible clone. The description comes out and says it is not a clone, which should have been a red flag, but I went for it anyways, thinking what do I have to lose.Again, it works and does what I want it to do, but not being able to upgrade is an issue for me as this device is always changing with new features.UPDATED: I decided that this is not for me. The software does not have the same features as the H4, so I went with the updated 2022 version with the SMA connectors. I really like everything else about this unit, but it will not work with NanoVNA QT so you cannot update the firmware, where the H4 you can.I really don't know if this is a clone or not, but it does not seem to be supported by the website that is referenced on github.I tested this unit against the H4 (with 4.3 inch screen) and they yielded different results - close but different. There could be many reasons for this, but I checked VSWR of both devices against 2 different HF Antenna analyzers and the H4 is the closest, so I am going to stay with the H4 and send the SAA back.
