I like both the thombow mono and mars Lumograph, you cant go wrong with either setI used medium weight 70lb drawing paper for testingboth sets come with 12 pencils of the same hardness level , 4H, 3H, 2H, H, HB, F B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B, 6BTombow Mono come in plastic packaging with 12 unsharpened pencils, eraser and small sharpenerMars Lumograph some with 12 pre sharpened pencils in a nice metal tin caseTombow Mono hexagon barrel is slightly larger then the Mars LumogrphMono has pencil grade marked on 4 of the 8 side, Mars Lumograph Is marked on all 8mono grade is marked with gold over white, Mars is easier to see quickly marked with white over blackboth have a nice barrel finishboth sharpen well, although mono has a slightly rougher wood after sharpening with the hand sharpener it came with.both sets feel the same on paper. very smooth with the softer grades all the way up to 2H, 3H and 4H started to feel a little scratchy on the paper as expected for the hardness.both sets blended the sameoverall both sets are comparable to each other. it really comes down to what you want in the set. the Tombow Mono is a bit cheaper but you also get an eraser and sharpener. the mars lumograph comes with a nice metal tin for a few $ more.Because of the nice metal tin i keep the mars Lumograph on my desk and use them at home. I have the Tombow mono set in my Derwent Travel bag with my Charcoal pencils for on the go drawing.

These are great pencils! I was a dedicated Mars Lumograph user till I tried these tombows. I do still love my other pencils but adding these to the mix just enhances my ability to create better art. The graphite is smooth & creamy, eventhe H or harder lead pencils. If you teach yourself to rotate the pencil as you draw you will find you keep the point & don't need to sharpen as often therefore getting a longer lasting pencil & you will want these babies to last because you won't want to find yourself waiting for your next order & being without. This is the 3rd or 4th set that I've bought. I bought this along with the Moleskine Sketchbook on Amazon. Received it quickly as usual. Having Prime is awesome. Nonetheless, the pencils are amazing especially on the Moleskine! They are superbly built and you can actually see that they are quality pencils. I sharpened every single one and the pencil points are strong and sturdy and resists breaking. I am able to shade with them without issues and they are the best pencils that I have sketched with so far. Having a copy of Killzone 3, I sketched out the Helghast soldier on the first page of my sketchbook and these pencils blew me away.PROS:+Amazing construction+Great pencil points (resists breakage)+Quality Wood+Great labeling of the pencil types+Comes with case+Made in Japan (not China)CONS:-The case can cause breakage to pencil points especially when the full case is inside a backpack.Overall, these pencils are great and Tombow makes great products as I have been using their Mono correction strip pens for years. If you like to sketch, these pencils are great.UPDATE 4/3/2014:Still going strong. Although I have not drawn a lot lately, the pencils are great. It just lasts and lasts. My only wish is that I can purchase separate pencils as some pencils get used more and other don't. So when I have to replace 1 or a few, I would need to most likely purchase the set again.

So far during my years in school these have been one of the best and cheapest options for high quality drawing pencils. All of my drawing professors have highly recommended them and for good reasons, they're affordable soft pencils that get the job done. They include pencils from H all the way to 6B which is enough to get a good value drawing done.

This has been the most expensive set of pencils I've ever purchased. And it was a worth it.I'm by no means a professional, but having used cheap sets from department stores, or even "art stores," I finally did some research and found this company mentioned. I purchased this kit after a search, and even though the packaging (and lack of case) really doesn't scream value, the pencils more than make up for it.Using the sharpener on the pencils was as you'd expect, though it forces the pencil at a specific angle, so make sure to let it guide where it needs to go. They sharpen wonderfully, and hold a wicked point.Aesthetically they are beautifully embroidered with a metallic-gold labeling, and the wood exposed on the sharpened ends are split free and white to red grains. I could do without the barcodes though.As they sketch, the graphite just seems to soak into the paper with even the lightest strokes. I will say a heavier hand will set you immediately to the darker values of these pencils; you'll need very light touches , of course mileage will vary with your quality and grain of paper.My one hesitation is that the graphite seems like it gives almost too easily. But that one slight, and one or two small nitpicks, can be overlooked for how these pencils perform. And even more withstood pressure. They are solid performers in my book.
