The two compartments can be used separately. They zip closed on all sides. We have had great success with this product and would highly recommend it. One caveat. We have one sweet and one very smart cat. We have to make sure the zipper pulls are at the bottom of the zipper and tucked away or our very smart cat can unzip her carrier. Hope this answer helps.

I haven't tried a heavier dog in it, such as your 55 #doggie, but it seems as though it might be a bit small for him. The screen is pretty tough, but if he moves around a bit, it might not be big enough. The description says it will work for multiple pets up to 50 pounds, tho, so it might be worth a try.

Yes, these are soft sided and bottom isn't hard material either so can fit slightly squished into a spot without losing much room in the cat limo. I fit 5 cats in 5 limos in the back of my mini cooper and all cats had plenty of room. I love these!
